Copyright Resources

General Information

  •  One of the best tools to measure if something is fair use or not is the Fair Use Checklist from the Columbia University Libraries. The Checklist is licensed by a Creative Commons Attribution License with attribution to the original creators of the checklist Kenneth D. Crews (formerly of Columbia University) and Dwayne K. Buttler (University of Louisville).
  • The library doesn't have a subscription to the CCC, but they do provide some general information on copyright.
  • This is the official copyright center of the United States. You can search to see if an item is copyrighted, and also register a copyright to yourself.
  • You can find the text of the Copyright Law of the United States here.

Copyright Tutorials

  • If you are in school and need to learn more about copyright laws as they affect students, this tutorial from Rutgers University will help.
  •  Information for educators.
  • The TEACH act lets educators use copyrighted materials for distance education. There are restrictions, so you can learn more here.
  • You can learn more about the TEACH Act from the University of Texas Libraries.
  •  Learn more about the CASE Act here.

More Information

  •  Nearly all aspects of copyright law are discussed on this website.
